When it comes to meditation, I am a mere newbie. Over the past few years I’ve come back to meditation time and time again with no success until more recently. Before I really put some effort into it I thought meditation was a load of rubbish. I just couldn’t see how sitting quietly was going to make me feel better. But miraculously it has helped, a lot. I’ve told very few people that I meditate but those I have told, have given me some erm varying responses, such as “It doesn’t do anything, you know.” “Didn’t have you down as…

As an introvert, being alone is something I’m pretty skilled at. I love being alone, I crave it, and when I don’t get it, life feels pretty overwhelming. But not everyone feels that way. There seems to be a misconception that being alone equals loneliness when actually that is far from the truth. Nowadays, alone time is rare. There’s always something to be doing or someone to meet up with, so getting some time alone is something that you need to make a priority, because being alone can be so beneficial. Even if you live with a partner or housemates,…

Sometimes the world seems simply too big for me. Other times it seems miniscule. I feel like I bump into the same people, go to the same places, can’t get myself out of a rut, and then suddenly, faster than I can blink, the world is huge again. The amount of things to do in such a short space of time feel overwhelming. And time is racing. It’s all a matter of perspective. Often we are quick to react. We get angry, upset or frustrated so much more easily than we are ever happy about a situation. But, I’ve found…

The other day I was listening to Liz Gilbert’s incredible Magic Lessons podcast. If you haven’t listened to it before and you’re into all things creative then listen to it. The particular episode I’m writing about today was ¬†Ep #7: Sexy, Dirty, Nasty, Wicked, where Liz tells an art teacher who’s in a creative rut to have an affair with creativity. She recommends that the art teacher take up a new creative hobby and do it in stolen time, when she’s not tied to other responsibilities, and to make sure that it’s something she’s doing for the love of creativity,…

When you’re a nursing student, life without reflection doesn’t exist. Each day we’re supposed to take half an hour to reflect on our practice, so what initially started as a way for me to reflect on my nursing practice and deal with difficulties I was facing, has turned into reflecting on all aspects of my life. If I’m being totally honest, I don’t reflect for half an hour each day because that’s just quite a long time really isn’t it? But I definitely reflect at least a couple of times a week on average. Reflection is all about making a…

Overwhelmed is a common feeling for me. Over the years I’ve got better at dealing with it, my head only feels 80% full most of the time now, rather than as though it is spilling its contents out over the top. I could tell you that meditation will help or to talk to some friends about how you’re feeling but instead I’m going to tell you what I do when I’m feeling overwhelmed. Have a Hot Bath You’re probably thinking that I didn’t need to add the word hot into that, but you’re wrong because when I say a hot…
